OVER THE CADAVER-PART 4 -PREVIEW

First year in medical college had two subjects in those days. Anatomy hits you on day one and it takes some doing to get accustomed to it ,but physiology is no less. Physiology lab was less dramatic but had few surprises. Guyton was holy book of physiology as Gray is of anatomy. But even before you start to cram up anatomy you have to cram up another subject .every one of us was given handwritten booklet of about 100 odd pages called medical literature . It was collection of dirty  lymrics  which everyone of us was supposed to cram up . If you are asked about a particular poem  you have to recite it there or you get the slap. Till now I am not able to understand the purpose it served in our education. The literature was so dirty it can only be written in xxx site. Of course I can tell you about about the question which was asked frequently by seniors in initial days .On which page of grays anatomy is your motherland? Answer was “page no 1386 sir”. You must have guessed it by now ,that page contained the diagram of female genital organs.
Physiology Practical were conducted in physio lab situated at first floor and had usual long tables and stools. Sitting arrangement here also was in alphabetical order but here we were sitting only on one side of table. Here I was sand witched between Harpal and Hansa Gupta . Initial practicals were simple and went on well when one day everyone was asked to prick his own finger and prepare the blood slide to see RBC and WBC. Well you can imagine the delima of many students .There were many shrieks and ahas in whole classroom. After many futile attempts Hansa Gupta was not able to prick her own finger so I have to volunteer my blood for preparation of slide . Physiology practical  were conducted from 2-4PM after lunch and it was really difficult to remain focussed with onslaught of slumber especially during summers.
